Oracy Ambassadors
Encouraging speaking and listening
An Oracy Ambassador in school is someone who helps or supports other children to improve their talking and listening skills. They encourage everyone to speak up in class, listen carefully to others and share their ideas clearly. By doing this, they make sure that everyone feels confident talking and sharing their thoughts.
Each half term, every class appoints five children to be Oracy Ambassadors. They undertake various tasks, giving them opportunities to practise and refine their oracy. They also experience speaking to different audiences and in different situations. By giving the role such prominence, we aim to elevate the concept of oracy and foster confident speakers.
Responsibilities of an ambassador may include greeting other children in the morning, leading chat and play games, reading timetables and instructions to the class, greeting visitors, welcoming families to our school and showing visitors around. Other responsibilities may also include introducing assemblies and reading out reflections / prayers and British values.
Each phase has an Oracy Mentor, whose role is to offer support and guidance and help children improve their skills. After their tenure, the mentors will facilitate a session of reflection so that the children can continue their growth beyond the role of oracy ambassador.
